What’s Next in the New Year: S3RVE Days, Fundraisers, & A Clothing Swap

We’ve launched into 2011 with a lot of developments and loads of new opportunities to serve. This Saturday, a team of about 8 volunteers will be helping with a number of maintenance jobs for a family in need in the Crumlin area.Next Saturday, the 22nd, a clothing swap is being held in Our Lady’s School Clonskeagh and will include maternity clothes, children’s clothing/shoes, and used toys in good condition. More details to come!Also, for our April Third Saturday S3RVE Day, one of the options to serve will include a bag packing fundraiser in a local supermarket. Funds raised will go toward meeting more needs and mobilising more volunteers through Serve the City!

EBS Community Fund

We’d like to extend a BIG ‘THANK YOU!’ to Paul, one of our loyal volunteers, for submitting an application for a community grant through EBS on behalf of Serve the City. We were informed recently by EBS that Serve the City are indeed one of the community groups who will be awarded a portion of the fund! 100% of the fund money will go towards the purchase of materials and supplies in our efforts to serve people in the community. Again, thanks to Paul and thanks so much to businesses like EBS who are committed to investing in their communities!

Successful Camino/TAPAS Night

Last night, our coordinating team and a few volunteers enjoyed meeting about 50 university students at an event to promote a trip to the Camino Santiago in Spain this summer. The group sponsoring the Camino trip have kindly offered to promote Serve the City and to also use the ‘pilgrimage’ as an opportunity to raise some much needed funds for our volunteering efforts with Serve the City.

The basement of Doyles’ Pub on College Street served as a perfect venue for the Spanish tapas-themed promotional event. During the course of the evening, information about the Camino Santiago was given and our own Alan McElwee was granted the opportunity to explain the vision of Serve the City to the group of students. Currently we are in discussions with the trip’s organizers to have their Camino participants join Serve the City for a ‘Third Saturday Service Day’ in April. We look forward to having university students involved in serving their city!

El Camino ‘Pilgrims’ Raise Money for STC Dublin

A couple of months ago, some friends of ours approached us about raising money for Serve the City through their annual El Camino de Santiago trip. So coming up on the 4th February, there will be a ‘Spanish Tapas Fiesta’ promotional event to provide more information about the trip as well as about Serve the City. There will be a suggested donation of €5 at the door, all of which will go to Serve the City Dublin. All Serve the City volunteers are welcome to join us downstairs Doyles Pub (College Green) from 19.30 to 21.30 on 4th February. (CLICK HERE to see the Facebook event page.)

Participants in the Camino trip will also have the option of raising more money for Serve the City through sponsorships of their ‘pilgrimage’ in June.
