National Day of Volunteering

National Day of Volunteering happens here in Ireland on Friday, 1 October, and we want to encourage you to find an opportunity to participate in any way you can. Be sure to visit the good folks at Volunteer Centres Ireland to find ways that you can get in on the action. (CLICK HERE to see all of the registered projects in your area.) While Serve the City won’t have anything happening on that day in particular, we are continuing our Third Saturday S3RVE Days on the 18th of September and the 16th of October.

In the lead up to National Day of Volunteering, there will be a Volunteer Fair in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar on Sunday the 26th, from 1-5pm. Serve the City will have a display table, so come on down to see us and discover other ways of volunteering your time and energy to good causes across the city!

Summer 2010 Report: Serve Days of Summer

During the second week of July (12-17), we held our annual “Serve Days of Summer” initiative. Over the course of 6 days, we deployed some 40+ volunteers to serve on 11 different service projects across the city. We were joined by two small visiting teams from the U.S.

At St. Augustines school in Blackrock, we painted the interior of one of the dorm houses while some of our volunteers assisted the Shanganagh Community Development Project with their summer kids’ club. The rest of our volunteers were scattered across Dublin throughout the week, gardening and painting in areas like Crumlin, Sheriff Street, Beggar’s Bush, and Drumcondra.

We’re grateful for the partnerships with other organizations who helped us find significant opportunities to serve, as well as the volunteers to get the work done. Here are just a few:

Summer 2010 Report: Urban Soul

It was a busy summer for Serve the City as we embraced more opportunities than ever before to serve our city!

In early July, we joined forces with a number of youth works organizations around Dublin for this year’s Urban Soul event. About 120 young people (14-18 yrs old) were sent out across the city to serve on 14 different service projects, from painting and cleaning in schools to gardening for elderly residents to painting and sorting clothes in homeless shelters. Urban Soul is a phenomenal initiative driven by a number of strategic partnerships with churches, schools, local authorities, and organisations such as Catholic Youth Care, ACET, Lourdes Daycare Centre, Mothers’ Union, and many others. Serve the City count it a valuable privilege to be involved with Urban Soul!

Third Saturday SERVE Day (April 2010)

Thanks to all of our volunteers who came out to serve during our Third Saturday Serve Day in March. Between the service opportunities in Greystones, Dun Laoghaire, and Crumlin, we had about 18 volunteers total.

This month, we’re back at it again with a number of different of opportunities to serve on Saturday the 17th. One of our service projects will be painting a kitchen for a woman in Crumlin. We are also looking into another painting project for an elderly man around the Pearse Street area of the city centre and a gardening project in Tallaght.

Serve Days of Summer 2010

Plans are well on their way for this summer’s service event, which will be happening from Monday the 12th of July on through Saturday the 17th. Last summer, we learned that extending the service project hours into the evening was helpful to our Dublin volunteers who wanted to come out to serve after their work hours and/or on Saturday. So once again, this year we’ll be scheduling the service projects/opportunities to happen every weekday evening (7-10ish) in addition to the 10am-4pm time slots during the day. We’ll also be joined again this year by at least three volunteer teams from various parts of America.

During our week-long summer events over the last several years, Serve the City volunteers have helped paint local schools, and do gardening and other DIY projects for local people in need. This year, we’ll be looking for the same types of opportunities. If you know of someone in need who could benefit from a group of sensitive and compassionate volunteers, please let us know by filling out the brief form in the ‘tell us a need‘ section of this site.
